OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently proposed the creation of a U.S. or global agency to regulate increasingly powerful AI systems during a Congressional hearing. Altman's company, known for its free AI chatbot, ChatGPT, has spurred conversations on the misuse of AI, touching on issues such as misinformation and job security.

The call for regulation reflects growing societal concerns about AI technology. Unlike Europe, the U.S. has yet to indicate the establishment of comprehensive AI rules. Sen. Richard Blumenthal demonstrated AI's potential for misuse by using a voice clone trained on his speeches and a script written by ChatGPT to open the hearing.

While industry leaders generally support AI oversight, they warn against overly restrictive regulations. Christina Montgomery, IBM’s Chief Privacy and Trust Officer, advocated for a "precision regulation" approach, focusing on governing specific AI use cases.

OpenAI, co-founded by Altman and Elon Musk, started as a non-profit research lab but has since evolved into a business with popular AI products such as DALL-E and ChatGPT. For more, read the full article.
